At some stage in their lives, people surely experience back pain, which is mostly muscular and can resolve itself without any treatment in a maximum of 6 weeks. The reason for the back pain is more often not complicated and is simply muscular in nature. Healing powers of the body are tremendous and all one has to do is to avoid too much bed rest and be active in order to recover rapidly.

Simple spine pain may be caused by postural problems, simple sprains or mechanical imbalance. In such cases the cause is muscular in nature and not because of any pathological process. Relief from pain can be achieved with simple exercises or some patients might need spinal manipulation treatment. Doctors call this type of pain

This type of pain is due to annular tear, spinal stenosis, disc prolapse, spondylolisthesis and foraminal stenosis. Exact cause regarding this type of pain cannot always be known therefore treatment becomes more difficult. Most often there may be psycho-social problems associated with this pain issue. Sometimes what a patient is experiencing is referred pain, which means that the main cause of this pain is not any abnormality in the spine but the pain is referred from some other part of the patient's body. The reason for this is that the spine and some other body part share the same sympathetic or sensory nerve supply that is the cause for the brain to misinterpret the real pain source.

Pain management or pain medication draws on various science disciplines to methodically study pain, its evaluation, its prevention, rehabilitation, diagnosis as well as treatment of painful disorders. The pain could be due to an injury, cancer, surgical intervention or any other cause such as headaches and neuropathic pain. In case of musculoskeletal and spine cases surgical treatment is distinguished from pain management, and it is employed after surgery to deal with recalcitrant or residual pain or it is used in place of surgery as part of a care program.

There are mainly two types of pain management techniques invasive and noninvasive. Invasive techniques involve the penetration of devices into the patient's body, though it should not be confused with surgery. Some examples of invasive therapies are injections, prolotherapy, electrotherapy devices that are surgically implanted and radiofrequency radioablation. Noninvasive techniques primarily include medication and regular exercises to get relief from back pain.
